Plant Field Trip (Fran and Georgia)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Lincoln university and the people in our group were Henry, Elan, Regan, and William. Our group went to Plant And Food where  we met Neil, Charlotte, John and a French scientist. We learnt what a nanometer was and we saw some melted plastic get spun into nanometre widths.
After that we went for morning tea across the road from Lincoln high school and after we finished our morning tea we did a challenge where we had to fill out  a sheet with questions like (find the Maori names for three plants and find three plants that feed birds.)
Next we went to see Trish at a field site. Trish showed us what good soil looks like and what disturbs the soil the most. When Trish had finished speaking about soil we got back on the bus and headed back to school. It was a great day for us.

A Gruesome Recipe (Fran)

Ratty soup

Ingredients: 500g of spider guts,a handful of rats brains,a kilo gram of cow dung, one teaspoon of toad sweet,3 kilo of mashed crocodile eyes and 12ml of long tailed bat blood

1. First clean out the cow dung making sure you leave no fly’s in it.

2. Remove the spider guts using a knife to cut hem open.
3. Next tire out your pet toad so you can get one teaspoon of sweat.
4. Mash up 3kg of crocodile eyes until it turns into 3 litres of liquid.

5. Skin the rats until you have a handful of brains.

6. Get a needle and poke a hole in your Long Tailed Bat and get 12ml of blood.

7. Put all the ingredients into a cauldron.

8. Boil for 15 minutes.

9. Make sure you serve hot so its not raw!

We're broadcasting - Springston Radio!

We're exploring the idea of radio broadcasting! A group of students from Room 5 has been helping Carol work out how to do this with iPads. We're working on our information skills, and our expression.

We're publishing our radio broadcasts on SoundCloud. We hope you enjoy our first effort!

Museum Trip (Fran)

Last Friday we had an interesting trip to the museum. There were five girls in my group. We left from school on the bus at 9am. It seemed like we were on the bus for one hour. When we got to the museum the weather was chilly but the sun was out.

First we explored the museum as we were in the first rotation. We went down the old street and then upstairs to the Antartica room. I really liked the polar bears because they looked so frozen in their environment.
After having a break outside we visited the Paua house and learnt about Kiwiana by doing a card quiz. I thought the house was very cool as they had a large collection of paua on the walls.
Next we had lunch by the fountain and all the girls played inside an old drooping tree that touched the ground.
Finally, Anthony taught us some myths and legends of Aotearoa. I thought the stories were very interesting but I had already heard two of them before.
Overall it was a spectacular day!

Lake Kaniere

Dear Mr T,
I am writing this postcard to you from the West Coast. I have been
here since Friday night with my mum's side of the family. So far the weather has been
horrible but the gold panning has been fun because I've learnt something new. However
it is still raining and we are trapped inside!
I hope you are having a great holiday in Auckland.
Best wishes,
Francesca

My Cousin

My cousin is a hard working creature. She has a black soft dog and blonde hair that shines when the sun catches it.

She always wears shorts and a sparkling tank top but sometimes wears jeans and a polo fleece when it is frosty.

My cousin often says, "Hey Frankie!" when she comes over to see me. Whenever I can't find her she's usually practising netball or cooking tea at home.

Another interesting thing about her is that she goes to Rangi Ruru high school in town.
When Hannah comes over we stay up late and watch the movies or make friendship bracelets.

What an interesting girl!

4th April 2013

Dear Trina,

Thank you very much for coming to our camp and helping with everything.
We really appreciated your help with driving us up to camp, making sure we got to bed at night and supervising us during the activities.

I had a great time on camp. Some of the highlight for me were the monorail, archery and air rifles.

Once again, thanks very much for everything you did. It really was an amazing camp and with out you we would not have been able to go to camp.
Yours sincerely,
Francesca.

Ethan's team

We had to work together on all of these. Our best work was the marble castle we had a high drop, then it rolled into a space, were it would come to a stop.
