The Plant Field Trip (Jeremy and Bryn)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to the plant food and we learnt about potatoes. We made crisps and French fries and we learnt about different types of potatoes and their colours. There are some that are purple and some that are red on the outside. Overall there are tons of different potatoes which have many uses. Such as for spuds, alcohol, and chips.

Netball Canterburys (Brodie and Libby)

Yesterday our whole netball team went to the Canterbury tournament. We went to Hagley park and we played five netball games but one was a bye. On the first game we played St. Albans and we won 4-0. In our next game we played Waimairi and lost our game and the next and the next we were so disappointed but the good thing is that we had a lot of fun. So thank you to our coaches that helped as to get to the Canterburys and all of the supporters that cheered us on.

Field Trip (Nathan & Caelan)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Lincoln Uni and Plant & Food Research.
We went to see a man who talked about potatoes. He showed us different potatoes e.g purple and yellow ones. He also made some crisps and turned on a potato peeler/cleaner. Did you know that McDonald's makes long chips that makes it look like your buying lots of chips?
And that lots of little chips is a rip off when you can buy big chunky chips.
You might think that thin chips are better and less fat but no. The fat chips are better because the thin chips soak up the oil. After that we packed up and left to have lunch at a park that a High school made called Mahoe Reserve. We really enjoyed the morning.

Plant Field Trip (Fran and Georgia)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Lincoln university and the people in our group were Henry, Elan, Regan, and William. Our group went to Plant And Food where  we met Neil, Charlotte, John and a French scientist. We learnt what a nanometer was and we saw some melted plastic get spun into nanometre widths.
After that we went for morning tea across the road from Lincoln high school and after we finished our morning tea we did a challenge where we had to fill out  a sheet with questions like (find the Maori names for three plants and find three plants that feed birds.)
Next we went to see Trish at a field site. Trish showed us what good soil looks like and what disturbs the soil the most. When Trish had finished speaking about soil we got back on the bus and headed back to school. It was a great day for us.

Netball Canterburys (Sophie W and Ellie)

Yesterday our netball team went to Hagley park to play in Canterburys. We played four games and we only won one of them. We were very supportive when we were off because we had green and black pom poms!  Also there was a Westpac helicopter that landed right beside our court and it was vey loud but cool. We played against St Albans, St Joseph Ash, Waimari, and Bishipdale. It was an exhausting day!

Insects Trip (Sevao and Ethan)

Yesterday some of us from the middle school went on a field trip to the Lincoln bug lab. We arrived and the bug man showed us wasps smaller then a bed bug! He also showed us wetas as big as our hand and a huge Fijian stick insect. We found out that there are just over 10,000 named bugs in NZ and scientists reckon there’s another 10,000 that are yet to be named. He even showed us a bug that he discovered and believe it or not it was his favorite kind- a beetle! All in all me and Sevao had a great time meeting the bug man.

Plants Filed Trip (Sophie R and Zarah)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Plant and Food Research. We got slit into two groups one was with Mrs Taylor and the other group was with Mr T and Rachel. First off we had a walk around the Mahoe research to find out about plants. Next we droped off the insect people and then we went to the farm to learn about special kinds of potatoes. We also learnt how to make crispy chips and french fries. The highlights for us was learning about plants. It was a very interesting trip.

Science Trip (Zayden & James)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Lincoln university where John showed our group a bug collection. We both thought it was really interesting. I liked looking at the stick bug at the end that was bigger than my hand! I Now have learnt a lot about bugs e.g. there are 10,000 different named insects in New Zealand, but john reckons there's another 10,000 undiscovered ones out there still. we also went to Mahoe reserve and did a scavenger hunt for the signs of the maori names of native plants. My group found all of them including the 100 year old fire box in the bush. It was a cool field trip.

Plant field trip (Max & John)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to an insect lab. We looked at the wasps and they were very small. We also learnt a fact about one of the biggest insects. Its leg to its body is 1/2 a meter long and its about 3 meters long. Then we went to the Field Trial and looked at how they are studying the soil. They use this thing where it see’s how much water there is in the soil and how much carbon comes from the ground. It was an exciting day.

Plant field trip (Zeke & Elijah)

Yesterday the middle school went on a field trip to Lincoln. We got split up in two groups, one group on one bus and the other group on the other bus. Our group went to a farm. We went to study seeds and saw different machines that divide up and clean the seeds. The other group went to potatoes and saw different things about cooking up potatoes.

After that all of the groups went to a plant and food facility. We all had to wait for bus 1 to turn up. Once they turned up we learnt about what different gadgets do on a big field trial. After about ten minutes of learning we headed back to school. It was a great day because it turned out to be such a sunny day!

we got extra break time cause we arrive at school late.

Inquiry into Plant Growth

It is now time to split off into pairs or threes and research something to do with growing plants. Follow these steps:
1. Decide upon a question - something you want to find out (e.g. Will plants grow in the dark?) A good place to start is on this website. The class books also have a lot of information for possible questions.

2. Make a prediction, or hypothesis as scientists say, about what you think will happen in an experiment (e.g. We think that plants will grow in the dark but not as fast as in the light). Record this on your experiment planning sheet.

3. Record your results as you do the experiment using sketches / photos / or graphs.

4. Present results at the science fair in some way (e.g. as a poster, movie, or slideshow etc).

5. Be sure to include all the information about what you did and what you found out (a conclusion). For example, did your hypothesis turn out to be proven correct or incorrect?

3. With your buddy- fill in the quiz sheet
4. Play the game
5. Report your answers back to the class

Germinator Experiment Results

We found that the beans which were put in bags with water sprouted in both light and dark conditions.

On the other hand, beans in the dry bags did not sprout at all.
